The season of Lent is one of my favorite times of the year. It is during this time that we walk with Jesus to the cross, trying to experience his suffering, or perhaps just meditating on our own suffering. For forty days we practice contemplation and prayer, a sort of housecleaning of the soul, if you will. Then on Easter morning, we rejoice in the Rising of our King, exulting in His Holy Power! Life conquers Death, Hope conquers Sin, and New Life begins.
This year, I invite you to walk this journey to the cross with me, as we reflect on what it means to suffer and to overcome.
"Since Christ suffered and underwent pain, you must have the same attitude he did; you must be ready to suffer, too. For remember, when your body suffers, sin loses its power, and you won't be spending the rest of your life chasing after evil desires, but will be anxious to do the will of God." 1 Peter 4: 1-2.
Let us pray.
Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you today with Thanksgiving in our hearts and minds as we prepare to spend the next 6 weeks reflecting on the priceless gift you gave us--your only Son. We pray that you open us up to feel suffering, to appreciate that suffering, and to rejoice in the knowledge that we no longer need to suffer. We ask you to bless us with the motivation and discipline to do Your will in all things, always. Amen.
